Alisa’s design piece has won the Honors Transfer Council of California poster competition for original artwork and graphics. This provided the opportunity to have her design to grace the poster, program cover, postcards, t-shirts, website, and name-tags of the Twelfth Annual HTCC Student Research Conference.
The Honors Transfer Council of California (HTCC) is a statewide organization that serves community college students interested in transferring to a four-year university. The organization was established in 1984, with the goal of providing support and resources to students as they navigate the transfer process. The HTCC holds an annual research conference for students to present their honors level research. Every year, this conference holds an open competition for students to submit their original designs for the conference poster and program covers.
Alisa’s winning design depicted a reproduction of her painting of a bright blue gate, the entrance to the Library Number 6 in Ismail, the hometown of Alisa’s father. Ismail is a city in Ukraine with a long history dating back to the 18th century. The poster design competition not only called for a visual design, but also for a slogan. Alisa wanted to commemorate her inspiration for education through acknowledgment of her roots. Her grandmother was an educator and a librarian for many years; therefore, Alisa was always surrounded by books and spent a lot of time in her grandmother’s library.
Since the design and the slogan was for an honors level conference, Alisa wanted to emphasize the importance of individual development and career exploration. Hence, the winning slogan became “Find Your Path: Explore, Learn, Grow“ (which was also used in subsequent years as the conference slogan as well as on the abstract publication). Alisa highlighted the significance of constantly learning and being open to opportunities to learn, through books and experiences. This is what the slightly open bright blue gate represents, and it leads into the light of knowledge from the shadows of ignorance.
